Why counting tokens matters

Language models don't read words but tokens: chunks of text about four characters long on average. Two things are measured in tokens: the context window (how much text fits in a conversation) and the cost of the APIs. Knowing how many tokens your text uses helps you stay under the limit and estimate spend.

This tool gives you a quick estimate for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and tells you what percentage of each model's context window your text takes. It's an approximation meant to give you an idea, not an official count.

What is a token?
A token is the unit AI models (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) split text into. Roughly, one token is about 4 characters or three quarters of a word. Context limits and API costs are measured in tokens.
Is the count exact?
It is an estimate. Each model uses its own tokenizer and the real number varies a bit depending on language and content. It is more than enough to know if your text fits in the context or its rough cost.
Why does it change per model?
GPT, Claude and Gemini split text slightly differently, so the same text can give a somewhat different number in each.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser; your text never leaves your device.
